Some sessions begin with a spark of excitement before you even lift the camera, and this one with the Gustafson family was exactly that. They’d won their session through their school’s fundraiser day, and from the moment we met at Kurnell, it felt like the most natural, joyful fit.

The afternoon unfolded slowly and softly — the kind of light that wraps around you rather than shines on you. Kurnell was calm, the water was glassy, and the sky was already hinting at the sunset it had planned for us. By the time the sun began to sink, the whole horizon glowed in warm pinks and golds, turning the shoreline into something almost dreamlike.

What struck me most about the Gustafsons was the way they moved together. There was such tenderness in the way Mum and Dad guided their children, such warmth in the way the kids leaned into them without hesitation. Every moment felt unhurried — gentle hands brushing hair from little faces, quiet giggles shared between siblings, and those soft, reassuring touches that say “you’re safe with me.”

Their connection made the whole session feel beautifully grounded. Even when the kids darted off with bursts of energy, their parents met them with patience and encouragement, turning every moment into something worth holding onto. It was nurturing, effortless, and full of heart.

As the sun slipped lower, the water caught every colour and reflected it back at us. The kids played at the edge of the tide, the parents watched with that unmistakable mix of pride and love, and the whole scene felt like a family wrapped in their own little world.

Driving home, I kept thinking about how special it is to witness families like this — warm, engaged, and so deeply connected. The Gustafsons didn’t just show up for photos; they showed up for each other. And that made the evening unforgettable.
