There’s a reason most maternity photographers nudge you toward the third trimester. The bump is round, your skin tends to settle into its photogenic stage, and most mums still have the energy for a one to two hour session. But the question of exactly when to book has more nuance than the quick “third trimester” reply, and the wrong answer costs you the gallery you wanted.
Here’s how I think about it after years of shooting maternity sessions across Sydney.
Why timing matters more than people realise
A maternity shoot captures something that disappears in days. Your body is changing constantly through the third trimester, and what feels like the perfect bump at 30 weeks looks completely different at 36. Wait too long and you might be too uncomfortable to enjoy the session. Go too early and the bump won’t read on camera the way you imagine.
There’s also the practical side. Maternity photographers in Sydney book up months in advance. If you wait until your bump “feels ready,” you’ll often find your photographer of choice is fully booked. Picking a window early lets you lock in a date that works for both of you.
The 28 to 34 week sweet spot
For most clients, I recommend booking between 28 and 34 weeks. Here’s why this window works:
Weeks 28 to 30 suit mums who carry small or want a softer, less obvious bump. This is also a good range if you’re expecting twins, since multiples often show earlier and you may already feel tight by week 32.
Weeks 31 to 34 is the most common booking window. The bump is well defined, your skin still looks settled, and most mums still have the stamina for a one to two hour session. Movement is easier here than later, which matters if your shoot involves outdoor walking or any posing on the floor.
This is the window I steer most first-time mums toward, especially for studio sessions in our Ingleburn studio. The light, the body, and the energy all line up.
When going earlier makes sense
Sometimes earlier is the smarter call. A few situations where I’d push the date forward:
- Twin or triplet pregnancies. You’ll likely be on bed rest or significantly less mobile by 32 weeks. Book at 26 to 28 weeks instead.
- High-risk pregnancies. If your obstetrician has flagged anything, don’t gamble on a late booking. Photograph earlier and worry less.
- Pregnancies with severe swelling. Some mums experience significant ankle, hand, and face swelling in the final month. If you’re already swelling at 28 weeks, that pattern usually intensifies. Earlier shoots photograph better.
- Pregnancies with planned early delivery. If you have a scheduled C-section at 38 weeks or there’s a medical reason your baby may come early, work backwards. You want the shoot done at least three weeks before any planned delivery date.
When going later can work
Some mums genuinely look beautiful at 36 or 37 weeks. If you’re carrying comfortably, sleeping reasonably well, and your skin still looks how you want it to, late is fine.
Your photographer will likely shorten the session, though. What was a 90 minute shoot at 32 weeks becomes a 45 minute shoot at 37 weeks because you need more breaks. That’s normal and worth planning for.
You’ll also want to factor in early labour risk. First babies tend to come on or after due dates, but second and third babies are less predictable. If you’ve already had one baby, treat 36 weeks as your absolute upper limit.
The studio versus outdoor question affects timing
The trimester answer changes slightly depending on location. Studio sessions can run a little later because the environment is controlled. You’re not walking on uneven ground or dealing with weather. Outdoor sessions need more energy from you, so I’d lean toward 30 to 33 weeks for those.
If you want to see how different bump stages look in real sessions, the maternity portfolio gives you a sense of how 28 weeks photographs differently from 34 weeks, and what to expect at each stage.
What to do if you genuinely can’t pick
A few practical tips for mums stuck between dates.
Pick the earlier date. You can always come back for a second short session later if you change your mind. You can’t go back in time if you wait too long and labour starts early.
Pick the date that fits your life, not the one that looks ideal on Instagram. If 29 weeks falls during school holidays and your toddler will be home, that might not be the easier shoot. Look at your calendar honestly.
If you’re booking maternity photos and already thinking about a newborn session afterwards, ask your photographer about packaging both. Many Sydney photographers offer a small saving when you book the pair, and it removes a planning step from your second trimester.
A note on second and third pregnancies
Second-time mums often skip maternity sessions because they “already did it” with the first baby. I’d push back on that gently. The bump looks different. The dynamic with your older child being part of the photos is something you’ll never recreate. And second babies often get less documented in general, so this is one easy way to balance that out.
Some of the most meaningful maternity shoots I’ve photographed have been second pregnancies where the older sibling kisses the bump or holds the ultrasound. That’s not a first-pregnancy moment. Don’t skip it.
How early should you actually book?
Booking the slot is different from the shoot itself. Most Sydney maternity photographers fill their calendar 8 to 12 weeks ahead. So if you want a 32 week shoot, reach out around 20 to 22 weeks. That’s also when most mums have had their morphology scan and feel confident announcing publicly, which usually triggers the maternity shoot conversation anyway.
If you’ve already missed that window and you’re past 30 weeks, don’t panic. Most photographers hold a few flexible slots for last-minute bookings. Just call rather than email and explain your dates.
Ready to book your maternity session?
If you’re somewhere in the second trimester and starting to plan, the easiest next step is a quick conversation about your dates. I’ll talk you through what each stage of your pregnancy will look like on camera, what to expect from a session, and which window suits you best. Get in touch through the contact page and we’ll find a date that works.
